When we have dominion over our perception, we have dominion over our emotions, how we see the world, our place in it, and generating a sense of [[Mindfulness (MOC)|mindfulness]] that we all deserve in ourselves. > > - A stoic is grounded by cognitive awareness of [[Focus on what you control|what one does and does not control]]. Master this and you relinquish being a slave to your innate responses and emotions, whether good or bad; enabling a thoughtfulness and self-awareness in all moments. > > - [[Amor Fati (MOC)]] is the idea of [[Accepting what is]] and is tied to generating mental fortitude. That everything that happens is intended by God and nature ([[Providence]]) and that we *must* not just *accept things as they happen, but to love them for who they afford us to become*; that we're made better by everything and it was ordained so. This is especially true in moments that require fortitude, such as ordeals, trials, etc. > - #note/tidy🧹 this references a literature note; that needs to change > - [[This too shall pass]] > - Strive to align your [[Virtue|virtues]] to that of [[The Stoic Sage]] > - On [[Death]]: [[Epictetus]] > - On control/[[Perception]]: [[Marcus Aurelius]] > - ## Introduction Stoicism was founded in founded in Athens by [[Zeno of Citium]] as a [[Hellenistic philosophy]] . Zeno, after losing all of his wealth in a shipwreck (he was a merchant), encountered a book covering [[The choice of Hercules]], which set the inspiration and stage for the foundation of Stoicism. [[Epictetus]] heavily influenced [[Marcus Aurelius]], but only through writing and guidance from tutors. Conspicuously, Marcus, never really mentions [[Seneca]] in [[Meditations (Book)]], yet Seneca is considered one of the critical influencers of Stoicism and even predated [[Epictetus]]. Association to Nero was likely relevant here. Figures to read: - Critical triad: - [[Marcus Aurelius]] - [[Meditations (Book)]] - [[Epictetus]] - [[Discourses (Book)]] - full-length lectures from Epictetus, as scribed by Arrian - *Enchiridion* (Handbook) - a synthesis of *Discourses* (above) - [[Seneca]] - *Letters From a Stoic* - [[Pierre Hadot]] - [[The Inner Citadel - The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius (Book)]] - a cornerstone of modern interpretation of the Stoic philosophy - [[Cato]] - [[Cicero]] - [[Nietzsche]] - [[Beyond Good And Evil (Book)]] - [[Ryan Holiday]] - [[Plutarch]] - [[Harry S Truman]] - Heavily influenced by Stoics, such as [[Plutarch]] - ## Nested MOCs - [[Amor Fati (MOC)]] - [[Momento Mori]] - [[Perception]] ## Loose Notes *These should be tossed here and cleaned up later* - [[Inner Citadel]] - [[Focus on what you control]] - [[Disappointment thrives between your expectations and reality]]
