## Literature
> Above all, don't lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to a point that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love.
>
> – [[Fyodar Dostoevsky]]
## Notes
- I’ve regularly stated before that, [[The lies we tell ourselves are the most convincing]], because there’s no one there to hold accountable, aside from ourselves. I think what Dostoevsky says about it simply an additive to my sentiment, with greater poetics, certainly.
- His addition, however, are the implications to love and respect, which I find intriguing… 🤔 I follow it logically, but I don’t find it that emotionally compelling. 🤷
- *Aside*: At this point, as of [[2024-12-29]], I’ve yet to read much from this author, but anticipate reading more of his work in 2025 as I dive back into [[Philosophy (MOC)]] and, more narrowly, [[Existentialism (MOC)]], for which Dostoevsky plays a meaningful thematic role in that narrative through the following books:
- [[Notes from Underground (Book)]]
- [[Crime and Punishment (Book)]]
- [[The Brothers Karamazov (Book)]]
