Pick out associates whose behavior is better than yours and you’ll drift in that direction.” — Warren Buffett Late in his reign, a friend stopped [[Marcus Aurelius]] as he was leaving the palace, carrying a stack of books. Finding this a surprising sight, the man asked where Marcus was going. He was off to attend a lecture on Stoicism, Marcus said, for “learning is a good thing, even for one who is growing old. From Sextus the philosopher I shall learn what I do not yet know.” That’s right, even as the most powerful man in the world, Marcus was still seeking out teachers. In [[Meditations (Book)]], he writes, “Go straight to the seat of intelligence,” and, “Mastery of reading and writing requires a master. Still, more so life.” Seeking out teachers and mentors is something that falls squarely in the category of “things in our control.” This week’s tip is to do that. There are some tools out there. [MentorCruise](https://mentorcruise.com/) and [Mentorpass](https://www.mentorpass.co/), for example, are online platforms where you can connect with experts from just about every industry.  There are many similar platforms, but it is just as effective to pick someone like Morgan Housel, Jason Zweig, or Ramit Sethi and read everything they’ve written, listen to every podcast they’ve been on or video they’ve made. As Seneca advised Lucilius in one of his letters:  > You must linger among a limited number of master thinkers, and digest their works, if you would derive ideas which shall win firm hold in your mind.  Pick out someone who is smarter than you and you’ll drift in that direction, to borrow from Buffett. **Additional Resources:** - [_Letters From A Stoic_](https://www.thepaintedporch.com/products/philosophy13?_pos=1&_sid=f0eccd5ab&_ss=r), 109 On The Fellowship of Wise Men - [_Letters From A Stoic_](https://www.thepaintedporch.com/products/philosophy13?_pos=1&_sid=f0eccd5ab&_ss=r), 6: On Sharing Knowledge - [_Letters From A Stoic_](https://www.thepaintedporch.com/products/philosophy13?_pos=1&_sid=f0eccd5ab&_ss=r)_, 52: On Choosing Our Teachers_ - [_Letters From A Stoic_](https://www.thepaintedporch.com/products/philosophy13?_pos=1&_sid=f0eccd5ab&_ss=r), 94: On The Value of Advice - [_Assembling Your Personal Board of Advisors_](https://sloanreview.mit.edu/article/assembling-your-personal-board-of-advisors/) from MIT Sloan Management Review - [_Finding a Mentor_](https://ryanholiday.net/finding-a-mentor/) by Ryan Holiday - [_What Nobody Tells You About Finding Mentors_](https://medium.com/@RyanHoliday/what-nobody-told-you-about-finding-mentors-b9c1e8037868) by Ryan Holiday - - - ## Week 7 Reflection How are you going to create your Scipionic Circle?
