* Ancient philosophy from Greece and Rome
* Arguably, Stoicism is considered one of the most widely applicable forms of philosophy, some even calling it a personal operating system
* Marcus Aurelius is considered one of the latest, but influential stoic thought leaders
* Notably, alongside Cato, a senator who challenged Julius Caesar
* Targeted at solving life/personal-oriented problems
* Single quote to summarize Stoicism: "Objective judgement now at this very moment, unselfish action now at this very moment, willing acceptance at this very moment of all external events: that's all you need" - Marcus Aurelius
* Three fundamental disciplines of stoics:
* Perception - how you see things
* Action - what actions you take in the world
* Will - how you endure bear the difficulties and suffering of life
* Prominent thought leaders, which in and of this list demonstrates how diversely (applicable) this philosophy is:
* Zeno - the founder of stoicism.
* Founded in Athens in the 3rd century
* Suffered a shipwreck where he lost everything - he discovers philosophy and founds stoicism through this loss.
* Marcus Aurelius - a Roman Emperor
* In his time, considered one of the most powerful men on earth
* Epictetus - born a slave who founds his own school
* Seneca - a famous playwright, yet a political advisor and Rome's richest man
* As opposed to other forms of philosophy, where most of it is removed from the applicable world, "the stoic is everywhere: the market, the senate, on the battlefield....stoicism is designed for the men and women of the world... it is an inner compass. Guiding and helping them navigate them through a life full of temptations, stress, and difficulty"
* Stoicism takes a deeper responsibility of solving practical problems, not simply theorizing or conceptualizing them
