Action is the bending action in the downcast in and is primary characterized by the “flex” or bend in the rod. **In general, the medium-fast action is recommended, especially for beginners**.
There are two types of actions:
- **Full flex or slow action** - bends all the way down to the butt of the rod. These are great for clean presentations and slow-going, calculated casting.
- **Mid flex or medium action** - bends halfway throughout the rodz
- **Tip flex or fast action** - only the tip bends; the rest of the rod is stiff. As opposed to slow action, fast action is excellent for getting distance on quick casts. However, they’re much harsher on the water’s surface.
Consider that action preference also comes down to personality: if you want to go cast slow and enjoy the experience, go with a slow action.
Action is a highly confusing term in the industry - it varies in opinion from person-to-person and even company-to-company.
