The weights of both fly fish rods and lines are responsible for indicating the thickness of the line and rod, which contribute primarily to their use case.
In all cases, rod and lines weights should be paired: a #4 weighted rod should use a #4 weighted line.
**Weight Guidelines**
- 1, 2, 3 - Ultralight
- Trout
- Dry fly fishing
- Panfish: bluegill, sunfish, perch, crappie
- 4, 5, 6 - Everyman
- Trout
- Smallmouth Bass
- 7, 8, 9 - Heavier
- Largemouth bass
- Steelhead
- Pike
- Salt Water
- 10, 11, 12 - Large & Salt Water
- Musky
- 13-16 - Blue water
- Marlin
- Sailfish
