A very common Stoic idea that those whose [[Purpose (MOC)]] in life is anything externally motivated, such as [[Worldly Wealth]], [[Fame]], [[Vanity]], and more, will be disappointed to realize that this is all fruitless.
Litmus test: name a Vice President that held office before the 1960s⦠You canāt. So why would anyone remember you?
In general, there are typically only a handful of people from each generation that are remembered, and even those names die off as those who remember them die off. For example, how many people know of [[Marcus Aurelius]], a Roman Emperor? Not the mass population.
**The point**: this is all about motive - [[Why motives matter]]. Donāt misunderstand this as a demotivator - it is meant to help make the important things clear, like your purpose and how you think of true motive.
