# Dune ## Metadata - Author: [[Frank Herbert]] - Full Title: Dune - Category: #source/books ## Highlights - “A popular man arouses the jealousy of the powerful,” ([Location 172](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=172)) - Note: Interesting... Just becuse you're powerful doesnt mean you're popular or havea populous appoach... There is always something MORE to desire - that which we do not have. - “I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” ([Location 254](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=254)) - “A human can override any nerve in the body.” ([Location 282](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=282)) - Note: True - pain is 100% mental. Ties to the story about the monk and his routine ice baths to improve sensation-based resiliency. - “Hope clouds observation.” ([Location 290](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=290)) - Note: Heh... Like being too close to something makes it truly difficult to see it for what it truly is - the subjectivity of objectivity. - “Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.” “‘Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a man’s mind,’” Paul quoted. ([Location 310](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=310)) - Note: Heh... Relvancy to our time with ChatGPT and more understanding-focused AI products? - “Listen to my nephew,” the Baron said. “He aspires to rule my Barony, yet he cannot rule himself.” ([Location 412](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=412)) - given the right lever you can move a planet. ([Location 459](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=459)) - Note: Aka, given the right information, you can manipulate anyone. In this case, blackmail. - A world is supported by four things….” She held up four big-knuckled fingers. “…the learning of the wise, the justice of the great, the prayers of the righteous and the valor of the brave. But all of these are as nothing….” She closed her fingers into a fist. “…without a ruler who knows the art of ruling. Make that the science of your tradition!” ([Location 656](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=656)) - She said the mystery of life isn’t a problem to solve, but a reality to experience. ([Location 679](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=679)) - “If wishes were fishes we’d all cast nets,” ([Location 790](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=790)) - Muad’Dib learned rapidly because his first training was in how to learn. And the first lesson of all was the basic trust that he could learn. It is shocking to find how many people do not believe they can learn, and how many more believe learning to be difficult. Muad’Dib knew that every experience carries its lesson. ([Location 1313](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=1313)) - He could not bring himself to call this dry wasteland of Arrakis his home, and he doubted he ever would. I must mask my feelings, he thought. For the boy’s sake. If ever he’s to have a home, this must be it. I may think of Arrakis as a hell I’ve reached before death, but he must find here that which will inspire him. There must be something. ([Location 1545](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=1545)) - Note: The poetics of this speak of how good of a father Leto truly was. - I honor and respect the personal dignity of any man who respects my dignity. ([Location 1815](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=1815)) - Note: I nudt love this line - I respect men who intend to respect me. - Some things beggar likeness, ([Location 1982](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=1982)) - There is probably no more terrible instant of enlightenment than the one in which you discover your father is a man—with human flesh. ([Location 1989](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=1989)) - “On Caladan, we ruled with sea and air power,” the Duke said. “Here, we must scrabble for desert power. This is your inheritance, Paul. What is to become of you if anything happens to me? You’ll not be a renegade House, but a guerrilla House—running, hunted.” ([Location 2034](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=2034)) - Note: Such great foreshadowing - Greatness is a transitory experience. It is never consistent. It depends in part upon the myth-making imagination of humankind. The person who experiences greatness must have a feeling for the myth he is in. He must reflect what is projected upon him. And he must have a strong sense of the sardonic. This is what uncouples him from belief in his own pretensions. The sardonic is all that permits him to move within himself. Without this quality, even occasional greatness will destroy a man. ([Location 2432](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=2432)) - “In our society, people shouldn’t be quick to take offense. It’s frequently suicidal.” ([Location 2757](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=2757)) - Note: Quoting Halleck - Is it defeatist or treacherous for a doctor to diagnose a disease correctly? My only intention is to cure the disease.” ([Location 2925](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=2925)) - Note: Wow, I love that line. Sort of a wiser take on the "don't shoot the messenger" - There should be a science of discontent. People need hard times and oppression to develop psychic muscles. ([Location 3103](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=3103)) - Jessica tested her seat belt, found it loose. She felt roughness in the strap against her left arm, realized the strap had been almost severed, would snap at a sudden jerk. Has someone been at this ’thopter, preparing it for us? she wondered. Who? ([Location 3221](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=3221)) - Note: While this may be revealed later, I believe this was Yueh. He genuinely did not want to see Paul and Jessica discarded, so he must’ve made way for them to “escape” knowing their potential. - Another guard bumped into him, barked: “Stay out of the way, you!” Even when they’ve profited by me they despise me, Yueh thought. ([Location 3324](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=3324)) - “I never could bring myself to trust a traitor,” the Baron said. “Not even a traitor I created.” ([Location 3385](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=3385)) - Note: Speaking about Yueh - The day the flesh shapes and the flesh the day shapes. The thought struck him with a sense of fullness he knew he could never explain. ([Location 3489](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=3489)) - “Mood’s a thing for cattle or for making love. You fight when the necessity arises, no matter your mood.” ([Location 3592](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=3592)) - For now is my grief heavier than the sands of the seas, she thought. This world has emptied me of all but the oldest purpose: tomorrow’s life. ([Location 3873](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=3873)) - respect for the truth comes close to being the basis for all morality. ([Location 3889](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=3889)) - A man’s flesh is his own; the water belongs to the tribe.” ([Location 4034](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=4034)) - “His plan has good points and bad points…as any plan would at this stage. A plan depends as much upon execution as it does upon concept.” ([Location 4199](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=4199)) - “Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past me I will turn to see fear’s path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” ([Location 4311](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=4311)) - “Out here, woman, we carry no paper for contracts. We make no evening promises to be broken at dawn. When a man says a thing, that’s the contract. As leader of my people, I’ve put them in bond to my word. ([Location 5276](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=5276)) - “You were as noisy as shai-hulud in a rage,” ([Location 5328](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=5328)) - A leader, you see, is one of the things that distinguishes a mob from a people. He maintains the level of individuals. Too few individuals, and a people reverts to a mob.” ([Location 5461](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=5461)) - Survival is the ability to swim in strange water.” ([Location 5802](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=5802)) - The concept of progress acts as a protective mechanism to shield us from the terrors of the future. ([Location 5998](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=5998)) - Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic. ([Location 6911](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=6911)) - “When religion and politics travel in the same cart, the riders believe nothing can stand in their way. Their movement becomes headlong—faster and faster and faster. They put aside all thought of obstacles and forget that a precipice does not show itself to the man in a blind rush until it’s too late.” ([Location 7091](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=7091)) - How often it is that the angry man rages denial of what his inner self is telling him. ([Location 7876](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=7876)) - The young men drew back from Paul as she came up to him, and she found herself momentarily dismayed by the new deference they paid him. “All men beneath your position covet your station,” went the Bene Gesserit axiom. ([Location 7891](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=7891)) - “My father had an instinct for his friends,” Paul said. “He gave his love sparingly, but with never an error. ([Location 8040](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=8040)) - Paul resumed his silent circling. Idaho’s words came back to him, the words of training from the long-ago practice floor on Caladan: “Use the first moments in study. You may miss many an opportunity for quick victory this way, but the moments of study are insurance of success. Take your time and be sure.” ([Location 8981](https://readwise.io/to_kindle?action=open&asin=B00B7NPRY8&location=8981))
